Writer’s Inspiration – like getting punched in your stomach!

A young budding wannabe writer to an established author, while strolling in the woods, “Tell me, where do your stories come from, are they stories of other people? Are they your stories? Is it all your imagination? I mean where does it ALL come from?”

Author: Experience.

Young writer (incredulously): Just your experience!!!

Author: You get punched in the stomach, describe it.

Young writer: “Well, you double over with pain in the centre of your abdomen and you are gasping for breath.”

The Author suddenly turns his hips to the left and swings his clenched fingers into the stomach of the young writer. His fist connects squarely with the young man’s mid-section, sending him sprawling into the mud with his body curled up in pain.

Author: “Your forgot to mention that your head hurts, your eyes burn and the snot is running down your nose. You are out of breath and you think you are going to die of suffocation. But then your brain sends a message to your lungs which suck in a deep breath of fresh air and then you start to see everything very clearly.” “That… is Experience.”

Do you believe a writer can't write on what has not been experienced?
I still have doubts.

Thanks :-)! I believe that one writes better when one is truly inspired. And I believe that experience, deeply felt in the heart, is what inspires people. Which is not to say that one cannot write if one has a healthy imagination too!
